Dear Suffolk Law Community,

In light of changing market forces, the rush to interview and extend summer offers to law students has shifted to a much earlier start date in the summer months.  Strictly speaking, "fall recruiting" has now become "summer recruiting."  Major law firms, highly selective public-sector employers, and most specialty job fairs have begun conducting their screening interviews in late July or early August.

In order to respond to these hiring trends, the five Suffolk Law Honor Boards will be instituting a change to both the timing and process for the annual Write-On Competition for honor-board membership, beginning with the 2012 competition.

Instead of holding two separate competitions over the summer (previously known as the “open” and “closed” competitions), the Honor Boards will now be hosting one large competition immediately following the completion of spring semester final exams.  The new system will allow all students to submit one assigned article to be reviewed by the five Honor Boards.  Prior to the release of grades, the Honor Boards will review each submission.  Once grades are finalized, submissions will be placed in one of two pools, based on whether students fall within a predetermined percentage of their section.  Although eligibility for each journal will vary, the Honor Boards will select submissions from both pools of students.  This new format should have positive results, as now all students will be eligible to compete for membership on the Honor Boards.  Moreover, the new format will allow students to join the Honor Boards earlier in the summer, thus giving Suffolk students every advantage for the job-application process.

Moving forward, information regarding the new Write-On Competition will be available through Campus Cruiser and on the individual Honor Board’s web pages.  Additionally, throughout the spring semester, delegates from the Honor Boards will visit 1L classrooms and hold a Write-On Competition information session to explain this process in greater detail and answer any questions you may have.  Below, we have provided a tentative timeline for the new competition.

Proposed Write-On Competition Timeline:

Last day of final exams: Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Start of writing competition, packets available on: Saturday, May 19, 2012

Submission due date of writing competition: Saturday, June 2, 2012

Honor Boards make calls notifying selected students: Saturday, July 14 and Sunday July 15, 2012

We all look forward to implementing this new, beneficial Write-On Competition format and thank you for your patience in this matter.
